Inuit Art Consignment and Auction
Throughout the fall and winter, Mountain Galleries is proud to host Inuit art consignment and auction. This auction features a broad range of works including early sculpture, experimental prints and compelling contemporary compositions by some of Nunavut’s most respected artists. In addition, we are pleased to present a collection of rare trial proofs and original drawings from the Kinngait (Cape Dorset) print shop of the late Terry Ryan, the former general manager of the West Baffin Eskimo Co-operative in Cape Dorset. Inuit Art Consignment and Auction: A Cultural Guide
This major sale also offers a rare opportunity to acquire one of the most sought after prints of the modern era by Inuit artist Kenojuak Ashevak. Based on a pencil drawing now in the National Gallery of Canada, The Enchanted Owl was released as an edition of 50 stonecuts in 1960. Over the years many copies of this print have been lost, damaged or collected by museums and galleries, limiting the number available on the open market. The auction offering includes a beautiful bright red copy of this print, which is a real treat for collectors.
The sale also showcases an exceptional collection of early carved and inked stones by Inuit artist Agnes Nanogak (1925-2001). A highlight of the sale is a complete set of 34 prints, comprising two stencils, 26 stone cuts, three engravings and three etchings, by Parr (1893-1969), one of the most important Inuit printmakers of his time. This print suite, which is the only presentation of this work to be offered at auction, offers a rare glimpse into the traditional Inuit nomadic lifestyle of its time.
